Aerospace #2: Collaboration with Suppliers
The customer has a fleet of airplanes that require replacement parts on a regular basis. One of the parts is the actuator tab screw and a mating female part. The threads on these parts are complex thread and have tight tolerances. Apex was tasked with manufacturing these components.
Problem
This project presented two technical challenges. First, the machining of the complex thread called for developing custom made cutting tools. The second challenge was making sure that the custom tools would cut the thread within the desired dimensions.
Solution
The engineering department at Apex worked closely with its tool suppliers to develop the thread cutting tools and the manufacturing procedure. The tools were then used to make sample threads which were tested and approved by the customer prior to producing the rest of the parts.
Results
The two mating parts were manufactured to specifications despite being complex and precise. The customer has since ordered many similar models, which were also machined successfully.
